Research Interests:
Dr Mackin currently has specific clinical and research interest in small animal hematology, hemostasis, immunohematology, and transfusion medicine. Particular areas of research and publication in these fields include immune-mediated thrombocytopenia and hemolytic anemia in both dogs and cats, immunosuppressive therapy (with an emphasis on vincristine and azathioprine), evaluation of platelet numbers and function in both dogs and cats, pharmacokinetics of the low molecular weight heparin enoxaparin in dogs, methods of bone marrow collection, feline blood types, and transfusion medicine (particularly, the use of photoinactivation to sterilize canine blood products).
