Sys 3.1 - Data Storage

Policy:

INST provides hard drive space for storage of data relevant to research and administration on servers managed by the Systems Administration Unit. Users are assigned appropriate access based on projects they are involved with, and are also granted a home directory in which to store non-collaborative data. In order to best protect this data in terms of security, redundancy, and potential loss due to catastrophe, it is strongly recommended that users take full advantage of the storage space on the servers.

Procedure:

• While you are free to use the local disk on INST desktop machines, you must understand that data stored there is not backed up and is susceptible to disk failure and/or corruption. Also, any data stored locally will be removed in the event that the Operating System is reinstalled on that machine.

• Any and all data stored on INST servers will be backed up nightly, and taken offsite weekly so as to protect this data from hardware failure, natural disaster, fire, etc.

• Data stored on INST servers will be subject to the Sys 4.1 Account Quota policy.

• Users are expected to maintain organized project folders, in such a way that information will be readily accessible to someone unfamiliar with their specific project. Should a user require assistance with keeping their data organized, the Systems Administration Unit will provide assistance.
